Burgess Hill is one of the mid 19th-century settlements created on enclosed Wealden commons. It developed around the railway station when houses were built for middle-class Victorian families who chose to live surrounded by beautiful woodland scenery. The Railway Hotel on the right is a fitting reminder of the railway's influence on the town's subsequent growth.
